Baby Audio Introduces Grainferno Granular Synthesizer Instrument
New plugin turns samples into playable synth voices using high-speed granular processing.
Baby Audio has announced the release of Grainferno, a new granular synthesis plugin. It allows producers to transform samples (including their own) into playable sounds by breaking recordings into microscopic fragments and reorganising them in real time.
According to the Baby Audio team, Grainferno is built on a newly designed granular engine and aims to provide both sound design flexibility and accessible performance features for producers and musicians.
Granular synthesis works by dividing audio into small segments known as “grains”. These fragments can then be layered, stretched or reorganised to create new textures and timbres. Grainferno uses this approach as its foundation, allowing users to reshape existing recordings into evolving pads, digital textures or noise-based sounds.
One of the instrument’s core functions is the ability to generate grains from two independent source files and morph between them. This allows users to blend different recordings – such as field recordings, loops or stems – into hybrid sounds that evolve over time. The approach reflects a wider trend towards sample-based synthesis techniques that emphasise sound transformation rather than traditional oscillator design.
Another key feature is the speed at which grains can be generated. When granular fragments are triggered at extremely high rates, they begin to function similarly to oscillators in a conventional synthesiser. In this mode, Grainferno can turn almost any audio recording into a pitched instrument that retains elements of the original recording’s character.
Modulation and performance controlsGrainferno includes a drag-and-drop modulation system to shape pitch, grain size, playback behaviour and more.
The instrument also features Macro controls that allow multiple parameters to be adjusted simultaneously. These controls can be assigned per preset, enabling quick changes to complex sound patches during performance or production.
Grainferno ships with more than 300 factory presets with contributions from producers and sound designers such as Virtual Riot, dnksaus and Francis Preve. It also includes built-in effects based on algorithms used in previous Baby Audio plugins. These effects are integrated directly into the instrument.
Grainferno is out now with list price of $129, but you can get it on an introductory price of $79. Get it here.
