Dreamtonics completes its trilogy with Instrument X, a neural acoustic modelling platform for orchestral instruments

Dreamtonics, the Tokyo based developer behind vocal synthesis tools Synthesizer V and Vocoflex, has unveiled Instrument X, a new platform that moves the company from vocal synthesis into full orchestral scoring.

Rather than relying on traditional multi gigabyte sample libraries, Instrument X uses neural acoustic modelling to translate notation directly into sound, giving composers and producers control over bowing, breath and key articulation without the use of static loop triggering.

The engine draws on up to eleven simultaneous microphone feeds, covering close mics, Decca tree and room ambience configurations. To keep these channels coherent, Dreamtonics developed a patent-pending method that measures a studio's acoustic geometry using a custom-built dodecahedral speaker array, allowing its physics-augmented neural networks to separate a room's directional acoustics from the dry instrument source. The system runs locally on a standard laptop, with no internet connection or dedicated GPU required.

Key features include:

• A unified articulation editor combining automated "Smart Articulation" with manual, per note control, allowing techniques such as staccato, legato, col legno and mute configurations to be layered on a single note
• A dynamics lane that automatically maps context appropriate dynamics while morphing the instrument's underlying timbre and harmonic response, alongside a full manual override
• AI performance retakes, letting users regenerate entire phrases or target specific elements such as timbre drift, micro pitch curves or kinetic intensity
• Advanced polyphony, rendering overlapping notes as fully separate voices
• A microphone mixer panel for balancing spot mics, Decca tree and room ambience

Instrument X launches with fifteen instrument expansions across three collections:

• Orchestral Strings: Violin 1, Viola 1, Violoncello 1, Contrabass 1
• Orchestral Woodwinds: Flute 1, Piccolo 1, Oboe 1, Clarinet in A 1, Bassoon 1
• Orchestral Brass: Trumpet 1, Trombone 1, Horn 1, Tuba 1

Each instrument also includes five style presets, Adagio, Allegro, con Fuoco, Pop and Ballade, which shift the overall emotional character of a performance.

• Dynamic polyphony: overlapping notes are rendered as separate voices rather than cutting each other off, allowing dense chords and evolving harmonies within a single track
• Instant variation generation: entire phrases can be regenerated, or individual elements such as timbre drift, pitch curves and dynamic intensity adjusted separately
• Organic electronic textures: continuous micro tonal pitch glides and loudness automation can be layered into electronic productions to move beyond static, loop based sources
• Trilogy integration: Instrument X works alongside Synthesizer V Studio 2 Pro and Vocoflex via the same plugin workflow, allowing instruments and vocals to be handled consistently within one setup

Founder and CEO Kanru Hua said the company had considered folding instruments into its existing workspace, but ultimately chose to build a dedicated platform:

"Many users have often asked us to bring musical instruments into our ecosystem. We concluded that rather than overloading a single workspace, Instrument X should stand as a distinct, dedicated platform alongside Synthesizer V and Vocoflex, completing our trilogy."

Hua added that while AI driven synthesis was the more straightforward part of the challenge, tailoring it to professional composition and production standards required the engine to be rebuilt from the ground up for the physics of each instrument family, even as the workflow remains familiar to existing Synthesizer V users.
